The season of keeping windows shut and procrastinating on airing out rooms has ended, and now the time has come to throw open the windows and take deep breaths of fresh air. Have you ever opened a window on a beautiful day, only to have accumulated dust swirl up, making you sneeze?
If your windows are dirty, that wonderful fresh air is ruined. Especially during pleasant seasons, it's a good idea to keep your windows and balcony clean.
So, this time, we will introduce methods for cleaning windowpanes and balconies.
Easy and simple! How to clean windowpanes
For the glass itself, prepare two regular rags (microfiber material is recommended). Soak one rag in lukewarm water with a neutral detergent dissolved in it, then wring it out.
Wipe the glass from top to bottom, making continuous S-shapes. Then, before it dries completely, wipe it with the other rag (dry wipe) to finish.
The inside and outside of glass windows can be cleaned in the same way, but for exterior-facing glass, it's easier to spray detergent, then rinse with a hose and wipe with a squeegee.
You might wonder about squeegees, but they're readily available at 100-yen shops and are highly recommended because they make cleaning easy.
Defeating hateful black mold! How to clean sashes (window frames)
If the corners of your sashes are packed with dust from the winter, you'll need a more thorough approach. The dirtiest part around a windowpane is actually the "sash" (frame).
First, remove large debris using disposable chopsticks or toothpicks while it's still dry. This extra step is key! After that, vacuum thoroughly with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a crevice nozzle.
It's a good idea to pour lukewarm water with neutral detergent dissolved in it to loosen the dirt, then scrub with a toothbrush or sash brush and wipe it off.
However, even then, the traces of that dreaded "black mold" on sashes where condensation formed in winter might not come off!
To remove these black mold stains, first cut kitchen paper to the size of the black mold. Then, put on rubber gloves and soak the paper in chlorine bleach (be careful not to mix it with other detergents!).
Apply it to the black mold like a pack, wait about 30 minutes, then wipe it off, and it will be as if it was never there!
Full of laundry dust!? How to clean your balcony
Because you go in and out of the balcony for laundry, dust and lint tend to accumulate without you even realizing it. Once you've finished cleaning the windowpanes and sashes, this pleasant season is the perfect time to clean your balcony and make it sparkling.
A well-known method for cleaning balconies is to tear up newspaper, soak it in water, scatter it on the floor, and then sweep it with a broom. This allows you to sweep away both large debris and small dust all at once.
If you want to clean more thoroughly, dissolve household detergent or baking soda (1 teaspoon per 100ml, but NOT for wood decks) in a bucket, spray it all over the floor, then scrub with a deck brush and rinse off. Afterwards, check the drain for dirt and remove any debris you find.
You could even create a relaxing corner on your neatly cleaned balcony.
Even if you know how to clean, cleaning windowpanes, sashes, and balconies all by yourself can be time-consuming and quite difficult. In such cases, we recommend entrusting it to a house cleaning company.
